Supporting families with loved ones in addiction

The RISE Foundation is dedicated to assisting families to understand the nature of addiction and the profound effects it has on relationships.
Using a new programme of assessment, education, counselling and peer support, our RISE counsellors have designed an education programme to help change the way that addiction is understood in family systems.
By connecting with families and helping them to cope with changes and the denial that may take place, our Family Programmes outlined below give a ray of hope to families suffering from the impact of having a loved one in addiction.
Our 10-week non-residential Family Programme has been developed to create awareness and educate families with loved ones in addiction.
The Programme is run one evening per week, for 3 hours per session. Each programme is attended by up to 12 participants and is facilitated by 2 qualified and experienced RISE addiction counsellors. The format is a combination of lectures and group therapy.
The Family Programme costs €300 per person (paid on the first evening or in two equal installments). The programme itself is heavily subsidised through RISE fundraising activities, as the cost of running each programme is over €600 per person.

It is our vision to significantly expand the number of non-residential Family Programmes and roll them out throughout the island of Ireland. We plan to deliver this vision over the next five years.
Our 5-day Residential Family Programme has also been developed to create awareness and educate families with loved ones in addiction.
It currently takes place in the Manor House on beautiful Rathlin Island Co. Antrim. The island is a haven of peace and tranquillity and its geographical location attracts people from all communities.
The residential programme runs from Sunday to Friday, several times a year. Each programme is attended by up to 12 participants and is facilitated by 2 qualified and experienced RISE addiction counsellors. The format, though similar to the non-residential programme with a combination of lectures and group therapy, is more concentrated and intensive.

We are currently working on a very exciting Rathlin Island Project to develop a dedicated addiction awareness and education centre for family members and community workers on the island.
Our Family Programmes are based around a group therapy approach. Each group comprises up to 10 people and two RISE counsellors, who engage in group interaction and discussion for personal growth and development. The group aims to assist one another to become aware of behaviours that need to change. Group members develop interpersonal skills, learning and healing.
One major outcome of group therapy is the instillation of hope in oneself and others for change, thus increasing one’s self esteem and self-worth.
